Increasing limitations in mobility and pains in the basic hallux joint are common complaints of affected patients. The pains with the hallux rigidus become more severe when the joint is over-stretched during the rolling-off movement. In earlier treatments only mutilating operations or stiffenings were possible. Here, the function of the joint during the rolling-off process is seriously disturbed. The stiffening caused a considerable limitation in the choice of shoes, especially for women. Basic hallux joint protheses have been available for a few years. Modern basic hallux joint protheses have an altered design that resembles a surface replacement in the knee joint. The prothesis components are fitted with press-fit during the implantation. Furthermore the durability can be improved and the function of the joint is regained with an improved implantation technique and soft-tissue balance. The prothesis is nowadays considered a standard at least with patients who do not want to participate in activities that involve a maximal strain.
