Mechanical and enzymatic injuries can lead to a vicious circle by triggering inflammation. This inflammation hastens the deterioration of the cartilage, which in turn leads to yet more inflammation. The complete wearing away of the cartilage can be counteracted by procedures known as cartilage smoothing, abrasion and autologous chondrocyte implantation. A surgical procedure known as lateral retinacular release of the patella decompresses and centers the kneecap.
