Leg Deformities

umstellungsoperationMalpositions in the leg axis cause an overstraining and lead to an increased wear of the menisci and of the cartilage layer on the inside and/or outside of the knee joint, causing arthrosis. Should the measures of smoothing the cartilage suitable for the arthrosis therapy be insufficient, the leg axis must be corrected. This is done in the course of a so-called rearrangement osteotomy. The pressure caused by the malposition is eliminated and the damaged parts of the cartilage are relieved.

The stability and the rapidly regained exercise tolerance of the leg are special demands to this treatment. The opening or "open-wedge" technique can often avoid the implantation of an eventual partial or full knee prothesis for a considerable period of time and can frequently relieve the discomfort.

The additive rearrangement osteotomy according to Puddu can nowadays be performed minimally invasively and more safely.

The operation is performed in the joint clinic. Post-operative measures and rehabilitation treatments are favourable for the healing process.
