Weather sensitivity in endoprostheses

x

Weather man against his will

It is an orthopedic everyday life: sources of implants in knee, hip and ankle joint report by a marked sensitivity to the weather, which often felt days before the onset of climate change.

"About 70% of patients feel a new day or two before the weather forecast around the joint has a superior sensitivity - from simple tingling to severe pain," said Dr. Peter Baum, head of the joint-Clinic in Gundelfingen. That phenomenon is known, however, nothing is published about it. After many years of repeated patient interviews is tree investigated the meteorological early warning and can now summarize its clinical observation: the larger the implant, the thicker the scar is and the closer sits the new joint on the skin surface, the more vulnerable the patient is of major climate change. The explanation lies in the changed conductivity of the bone, the metal of the artificial joint responds to pressure and temperature, unlike the bone.

The reaction of the body does to the weather, do not change, "but it is important to inform the patient before the operation of this new perception, so that he fears will be taken because even the patient himself does not automatically with the change of weather in connection brings, "says Baum. Most of this phenomenon will disappear after two to three years.

In Germany every year about 200,000 hip and 150,000 knee joints are implanted. In addition, there are also shoulder, elbow and finger joint prostheses. After installing a new joint formed by the stability of a prosthesis from the body newly formed bone, which surrounds the prosthesis firmly.
